Network Active /Pasive Monitoring
Active monitoring simulates user behavior to determine possible network performance. An active performance monitor does not examine real users and data, but emulates how real users behave on a network. This emulation occurs in real time at set intervals, which means that your monitor will always be analyzing the simulated performance data.
The greatest benefit of active monitoring is the ability to maintain complete visibility into your network. While active monitors are not measuring actual traffic, they do allow you to see potential problem areas before they affect users.
Passive monitoring collects actual data from users and analyzes it over a period of time. The monitor then studies the analysis and releases the results to the user of the monitor. Unlike active monitoring, passive monitors do not inject test data into the network to emulate user behavior. Instead, they extract actual user data from specific points on the network.
Compared to active monitoring, passive monitoring generates less voltage on your network hardware because the interval between tests is much longer. However, passive monitors typically analyze the flow to and from a specific device in your network. As such, it requires specialized hardware to capture user data.
